Young Warned Over Insurance

The head of a motoring insurance industry group has explained that the cost pressures faced by the young may make them more prone to driving uninsured.

Avoiding the legal consequences of driving without insurance is a major reason for a campaign to encourage drivers to stay covered, it has been stated.

Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) chairman Keith Morris said the Stay Insured campaign is particularly focused on younger people as the body is concerned this group may be most willing to drop their cover to help make ends meet.

However, the failure to have car insurance can have serious results, he noted, pointing out that 232,000 people were prosecuted for driving uninsured last year.

"The campaign is about helping these people make the correct choices," Mr Morris added, noting that it is people looking to make financial savings - rather than hardened criminals - who make up the majority of uninsured drivers.

Figures from the MIB recently revealed that around 600,000 drivers without insurance are aged between 21 and 29, representing 34 per cent of all those on the roads without cover.
